SPEAKING
I grew up in a church family and was first invited to teach God’s Word as a 17-year old in my home church. I loved the opportunity to open God's Word for people, but after a few years realised that I needed a much better grasp of the art and craft of preaching biblical sermons. Hence the decision for Rochelle and I to head to Dallas Theological Seminary (Dallas, Texas), where I majored in Expository Preaching.
I have now been preaching regularly for more than 30 years, and preaching is at the heart of what I love to do. I am passionate about preaching in local churches, but also in training, coaching and encouraging other preachers to fulfil the call of 2 Timothy 4:2, "Preach the Word."
These days I am part of the preaching team at Gracecity Church across their various locations. I also have the privilege of speaking at a number of other churches across New Zealand, and in other countries around the world.

PREACHING SAMPLES
Below are two recent examples of sermons that I have given at Gracecity Church in Auckland, that give an idea of how I open up God's Word for His people.
The example on the left is a sermon from a series in the life of Jacob, that was done as part of a "Collective" of Auckland churches involving Shore Community Church, LifeChurch Manurewa, and Gracecity.
This message explores the historical narrative about the multiple marriages that Jacob entered into, described in Genesis 29-30, and the host of children that were born as a result. The story doesn't provide a flattering picture of this Old Testament figure of faith. But as I suggest at the end of the message, it provides us hope about the mess we might have made in our lives and what God can do in His grace.
The sermon on the right is from a Christmas series at the end of 2023, in which we examined Matthew's version of the Christmas story.
This sermon looks at the most ignored part of that story, when King Herod massacred the babies of Bethlehem. The message helps us understand the way that Matthew is presenting Jesus as a vulnerable child, and reminds us that the incarnation means that Jesus understands our weaknesses and trials.
